The Celestial Council, or Aha Lani, is a distinguished body of twelve men and twelve women appointed directly by the King of Hawaiʻi. Serving as a high advisory council, the Aha Lani provides wisdom, guidance, and counsel on matters of governance, diplomacy, and the well-being of the Hawaiian Nation. Each member is chosen for their integrity, knowledge, and dedication to the Kingdom, ensuring that the voice of the people and the will of the divine are reflected in the decisions of the Crown.

The First Voice of the Celestial CouncilLeo Mua o ka ʻAha Lani is both a sacred responsibility and a practical duty. They have the responsibility of guiding deliberation and the duty of ensuring order, fairness, and harmony within the Council’s proceedings.

The First Voice of the Celestial CouncilLeo Mua o ka ʻAha Lani is the foremost voice within the chamber, and as the outward voice of the Council itself, proclaiming its will to the Crown and to the realm. The office is both a trust and a kuleana (sacred responsibility), rooted in the Kingdom’s sovereignty and in the order that guides its governance.

The Responsibility of the First Voice of the Celestial Council:

  • Presiding Authority: Convene and oversee all formal sessions of the Celestial Council, ensuring that discussions are conducted with dignity, respect, and adherence to established protocols.
  • Voice of the Council: Serve as the principal representative and communicator of the Council’s decisions, declarations, and resolutions, both to the Crown and to the people of the Kingdom.
  • Guardian of Order: Maintain the balance of discourse within the Council, recognizing members to speak, facilitating debate, and safeguarding the integrity of the decision-making process.
  • Mediator of Deliberations: Guide dialogue toward consensus where possible, uphold fairness in the expression of diverse voices, and resolve disputes within the chamber with impartiality.
  • Advisor to the Crown: When called upon, present the unified voice of the Council to the Sovereign, offering counsel, insight, and the collective will of the Council on matters of governance and policy.
  • Custodian of Tradition: Uphold the spiritual and cultural dignity of the Celestial Council, ensuring that its proceedings reflect both the sacred heritage of the Kingdom and its ongoing responsibilities in governance.
