The Kingdom of Hawaiʻi is honored to announce the appointment of Dr. Gordon Grado as its new Surgeon General. A distinguished oncologist with over 45 years of experience, Dr. Grado brings a wealth of expertise in radiation oncology and a commitment to advancing public health.
Dr. Grado received his medical degree from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine and completed his internship at the University of Chicago. He specialized in radiation oncology during his residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. His dedication to cancer treatment led him to establish a pioneering brachytherapy program in 1989 while serving as Chairman of the Radiation Oncology Department at Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona. This innovative approach combined biplane ultrasound and fluoroscopic imaging to enhance the precision of prostate cancer treatments.
As the founder and medical director of Southwest Oncology Centers and the Grado Radiation Center of Excellence, Dr. Grado has been at the forefront of integrating advanced technologies in cancer care. His centers were among the first to introduce TomoTherapy, a 360-degree radiation delivery system, and the Xoft Axxent Electronic Brachytherapy System in the Phoenix metropolitan area.
Dr. Grado's influence extends beyond clinical practice. He has held academic appointments at esteemed institutions, including the University of Minnesota School of Medicine and the Mayo Clinic. His work has taken him worldwide, training medical professionals in Brazil, Mexico, and China, and contributing to the development of prostate brachytherapy programs globally.
In recognition of his contributions to medical science, Dr. Grado received an honorary Doctor of Sciences degree from Eastern Illinois University in 2013.
In his new role as Surgeon General, Dr. Grado is dedicated to enhancing the Kingdom's public health infrastructure. He aims to integrate innovative medical practices with community health initiatives, ensuring that all residents have access to high-quality healthcare services.
